Debra Monroe Book Launch Party Thursday June 17 in Austin

Michael May

Hear Debra Monroe read from her book, “On the Outskirts of Normal,” about her experience being a white mom raising a black daughter in a small town in Central Texas. The event starts at 7pm, June 17 at Bookpeople in Austin. Proceeds from sales will benefit a local nonprofit Extend-A-Care for Kids, which provides subsidized after-school and summer daycare to parents who otherwise can’t afford it.

Monroe’s essay on this theme will appear in the Observer’s summer books issue, July 23.

Do you think free access to journalism like this is important?
The Texas Observer depends on support from its members to keep telling stories like the one you are reading now. This fall we're looking for 200 more sustaining members—people like you who can give us as little as $0.99 per month. Your membership means we can continue shedding light on issues that might otherwise go unreported. Can we count on you?
