Lf 1. Page 7 March 7, 1955 THE TEXAS OBSERVER Influence in Grain Case Denied by Brownell AUSTIN Denials came last week from Washington and Galveston that Governor Shivers had influenced the U.S. Justice Department in its dismissal of a criminal indictment against a political friend of the Governor’s. Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., said that neither President Eisenhower nor Shivers had ever communicated with his department about the indictments against Bunge Grain Company and Galveston elevator operators, including E. H. Thornton, Sr., father of Shivers’s chairman of the State Highway Commission, E. H. Thornton, Jr. In Galveston, Thornton Jr. said “influence” had nothing to do with the dismissal of the indictment against his father. “The government had no case,” he said. In Washington, Brownell expressed resentment that his motives had been questioned. The elder Thornton and four others were indicted June 10, 1954, for conspiracy to defraud the United States in connection with the mixing of Canadian good-grade wheat with “hog-feed” grade wheat. National commentators had reported that Shivers conferred with Eisenhower and Brownell shortly before the indictments were dismissed.
