Eye on Texas: Flex Time

Part of the medium’s draw for me, as for many photographers, is the access it allows to places I would have never otherwise get to go and people I would never otherwise get to meet. The gift of access, combined with my own personal practice of yoga, made my project on prison yoga a dream assignment. The teacher and class were incredibly welcoming, and prison staff allowed me to explore the space, including the caged guard area from which I shot this image of instructor Jim Freeman, of Austin-based Conviction Yoga, at left, leading a class of inmates at the Powledge Unit in Palestine in 2013.
