Em loyee Owned and Managed COMMUNICATIONS, INC. AUSTIN, TEXAS 3019 Alvin DeVane, Suite 500 389-1500 Data Processing Typesetting Printing Mailing Austin lobbyist Kim Ross organized the medical association campaign that promoted the candidacies of Republican candidates whom doctors assume will place limits on malpractice awards. If you received a courtcandidates push card from your doctor, it wasn’t given to you for your health. The conservative slate-packaging for the court is something that other media consultants will be studying in the future. Barbara Culver, the only Republican incumbent defeated, had angered the Texas Medical Association with an opinion she wrote shortly after she was appointed. The docs went with Hightower and he won though it can be assumed that some of what should have been Culver’s natural constituency, conservative Christian Republican men and women, failed to vote for her because of gender. And Hightower probably benefited from the name recognition of the more widely known Ag Commissioner. V ONE AD CAMPAIGN that the public just didn’t swallow was a Dean Rindy package promoting Democratic candidate Karl Bayer for Supreme Court justice. The ad used a visual of a logo similar to Bayer Aspirin’s registered trademark in front of a pill being dropped into a glass of water. The pill then dissolved like an Alka Seltzer, or like the Bayer candidacy which in the end didn’t wash either. Some are wondering why Bayer wasn’t packaged as the former EPA litigator that he once was. Or, the lawyer who drafted the chemical right-to-know law sponsored by Democratic Rep. Ed Watson. Or the only candidate to try his hand at imposing some genuine campaign finance standards. V MORE BAD MEDICINE from the physicians who are out to heal us all. If Congressman Sarpalius is hard to swallow keep in mind that the American Medical Association, in American Medical News, is taking their share of credit for Senator Sapp’s advance from the state Senate to the U.S. Congress. The doctors came through again, this time with $100,000. Not that Sarpalius’s opponent was a better choice. The best medicine in this case might have been to sit the election out. V IN THE END Austin political operative and Dukakis Co-chair Ty Fain was not the only Democrat unhappy with the Duke’s organization. The polls had hardly closed before Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower was on the air with a Texas State Network radio reporter, letting fly at Dukakis’s hired campaign director Tom Cosgrove who apparently never realized that he was not doing a campaign in Pennsylvania to whence he has since returned.
