Over the past year, a group of concerned citizens calling themselves the Panhandle Environmental Awareness Committee through regular channels and the Freedom of Information Act. That information, as well as the unanswered questions from the 1976 environmental assessment, point to the need for still more data on Pantex’s safety. Early last spring, PEAC began a twostage process to force Pantex to undertake a complete environmental impact statement as outlined in the National group noted that all other manufacturers involved in nuclear weapons construction had voluntarily prepared full-scale environmental impact statements years before. Pantex and the DOE responded that the 1976 assessment was adequate. But an assessment is to a full impact statement as a single sentence is to a dissertation. PEAC, joined by four indiagainst Pantex in Federal district court in Amarillo asking that Pantex perform the full impact study as required under NEPA or shut down until it did. The suit cites numerous deficiencies in Pantex’s 1976 assessment, including omission of data about transportation, wastes and material storage and risk probabilities. The suit also recounts a history of accidents at Pantex stretching back to 1960-61, when some areas and some employees of the plant were contaminated by plutonium. Media reaction to the lawsuit has been low-key. The Globe played the story under a one-column headline on the front page of the afternoon edition a day after the suit was filed. The story was general in nature and implied that an assessment is very much the same thing as an impact statement. The next day, the paper carried an interview with one of the plaintiffs, an interview the reporter said he wanted to do just to help get a little more information to the public on the lawsuit’s issues. Television stations reported the suit in the brief and depthless style consistent with their reporting of other events and did no follow-ups. Only one radio station carried an interview with one plaintiff. That was that. Slightly more substantial than three paragraphs, but not much more informative. [=I
