Probably a more crucial problem for the Action party was the disaffection of key party leader Ismael Alfaro, who is described as the driving force behind the turnout of party supporters. Alfaro refused to work for the party this year because of a serious disagreement with the rest of the leadership. The problem arose before the spring elections, when Alfaro’s stepson was beaten and knifed to death. One of those implicated in the crime was sent to the state prison at Huntsville, for five years. Alfaro believed the sentence too light. He also contends that there is another youth who helped in the murder who has not been punished. Alfaro believes favoritism on the part of some Action party leaders is responsible for the second boy’s not being brought to trial. The future of the party is now very much in question, and probably will be determined in next year’s elections. Regardless, the party has consistently elected some of its members to office, has demonstrated a strength in the grassroots and an understanding of developing and dealing effectively with local issues and has given hope to those who believe democracy must be broadened in South Texas. 14 The Texas Observer ATHENA MONTESSORI SCHOOL SUMMER SESSION Ages 2-7 Red River at 41st GR 6-9700 or GL 4-4239 Leo Nitch, Director MEETINGS THE THURSDAY CLUB of Dallas meets each the Downtown YMCA, 605 No. Ervay St., Dallas.
