St. John Garwood’s communication in your publication of July 10, I was unaware of the reason for the proposed change to the appointive system in the Texas judicial selection and tenure system. Mr. Garwood points out clearly the reason when he said “because I regard our existing system as an antiquated, politically oriented, campaignmoney-ridden process, masking under the 14 The Texas Observer MARTIN ELFANT Sun Life of Canada 1001 Century Building Houston, Texas CA 4-0686 holy name of democracy through popular election.” Surely, the intelligent readers of the Observer can understand this compelling reason for dispensing with the elective system in our separate but equal legislative and executive branches as well as in the judicial. We all recognize the division caused among our people by the various campaigns of various candidates supporting various ideologies and beliefs. We can avoid these divisive, antiquated and politically oriented campaigns by setting up a three or more man committee of lawyers to appoint our judges and a separate and distinct three or more man committee of political science teachers to appoint our governor in the executive branch, to Dr. Louis E. Reason compels us to know that these highly trained lawyers and politically wise professors are much more qualified to select the most competent governor, legislators, and judges than the common ordinary citizens who are untrained in the fields of government. Also, we know that dictatorship is much more efficient than the “antiquated, politically oriented, campaign-money-ridden process masking under the holy name of democracy through popular election.” Too often, when our leaders bring up these plans, too many of us bring up the failures of Hitler, Mussolini, Joe Stalin, and others. The mere fact that there have been a few failures in the past of systems other than the free elective process does not mean .that such systems are all doomed to failure. . We should not be satisfied with just abolishing the free election process in one of our three separate branches of government. We can go all the way and abolish the free election process in the other two branches as well. If we explain it to all Texans properly and if the major oil and gas companies and others so situated will finance our campaign, we can stamp out democracy all together.
