Samiyah Green is a student at the Texas Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Her poem won first place in “What Juneteenth Means (To Me),” a contest organized by Cyrus Cassells, 2021-22 Texas poet laureate, and made possible by the Academy of American Poets and the Mellon Foundation. It is aimed at encouraging young writers to explore the significance of Juneteenth in Texas and American history.
