The specter of anti-trans legislation year after year has a chilling effect on medical providers trying to offer longterm health care for transgender people.
Violeta Dorantes is a Latinx, trans woman, and first-generation college student at the University of Texas at Austin. She recently interned at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, which focuses on strengthening press freedom worldwide. Growing up primarily surrounded by Mexican culture and language made her an advocate for herself early on. With journalism, she continually seeks to cover communities beyond her identity with the same urgency she had when advocating for herself.
