This December, come hell or highwater, the Texas Observer will celebrate its 70th anniversary, and we want YOU to be part of the celebration.
This year, Texas’ original champion of independent journalism is 70 years old. Our inaugural issue was published on December 13, 1954, a time when big city papers dictated what news Texans could and could not read. The Texas Observer published stories that other publications would not touch. And while technology has transformed almost every aspect of journalism over the past seven decades, one thing has not changed: Texans need the Texas Observer to hold the powerful to account and tell the Texas stories the world needs to know.
So, what better way to mark this historic event than with a good old-fashioned party? On Tuesday, December 3, starting at 6:30pm we want you to join us to celebrate the Texas Observer at the legendary Scholz Garten in downtown Austin. By making a donation of $25 or more per person here, you will join Observer staff past and present for an evening of festivity, celebrating the legacy of the Texas Observer, and looking forward to the work ahead. All guests will receive two drink tickets with their donation of at least $25, which will help us cover the costs of the evening. Any amount you can give above and beyond will go directly back into producing the independent reporting that becomes more vital to our democracy with each passing day.
We are honored to carry on the work of the Observer’s visionary founders, especially the legendary Ronny Dugger, and its storied writers, editors, and staff. Texas has always needed an Observer, and we’re all here, thanks to them and to you.
