The Texas Miracle #11: Beer for My Enemies

On the podcast: Why's the Texas Legislature so weird about beer? A craft brewer gives us a no-foam answer. Caution: corporate interests at play!

The Texas Miracle podcast logoThis week on the Texas Miracle, the Texas Observer’s weekly compendium of everything you need to know, but maybe wish you didn’t, about the Lone Star State: Grab a cold one — if you’re of age, that is — because we’ll be talking to the San Antonio craft brewer and former economist who turned back Texas’ antiquated beer regulations and paved the way for what could soon be a $6 billion beer industry in Texas.

And if there’s anything bigger than beer in Texas, it’s football — which is why the news of a widespread institutional cover-up of sexual assault at Baylor University has dominated headlines. But just because Baylor has made the biggest news lately doesn’t mean it’s the only college where administrators would like to keep their troubles under wraps. We’ll talk to Texas Monthly writer Jessica Luther, author of the upcoming book Unsportsmanlike Conduct, who’ll help us parse what the situation means for colleges across the country. Is Baylor an outlier, or a bellwether?

And we’ll head out to the Texas tiki shed for this week’s journalist roundtable with Observer staffers Naveena Sadasivam and Alexa Garcia-Ditta and Dallas Morning News reporter Bobby Blanchard, catching up on Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s latest efforts to stand up for a little-known mom-and-pop outfit called Exxon. And as (almost) always, Observer staffer and Strangest Stater Patrick Michels brings us the wildest news from far-flung Texas, including the status of what may be a gaping hellmouth just west of Odessa.
