“For my book, Home Field: Texas High School Football Stadiums From Alice to Zephyr (University of Texas Press, $39.95), I chose to photograph the stadiums in winter when they are in their least attractive state. I wanted them to look like they had just had a season of football played in them. The band has filed out of the stands and the team bus is long gone. The stadiums are quiet and contemplative, which is the opposite of how we are used to seeing them. These quiet moments can be illuminating in ways that photographs of a running back spiking the ball in the end zone after a touchdown cannot.”
