This photo, taken in 1988, was part of a five-picture series published in Texas Monthly. The photos were of men who had fought in the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s and later became American citizens. At the age of 9, Jesus Gonzalez served with Emiliano Zapata’s army; he also spied for Pancho Villa during the revolution. He left the conflict after being wounded three times in the chest. Gonzalez moved to Texas in the early 1920s and eventually settled in Baytown. This image was taken on the front porch of his home when he was 86 years old.
