How Has Your Texas Neighborhood Changed?

Texas has a housing problem.

More than half of renters in the state spend more than 30 percent of their family’s income on housing, the long-standing metric of affordability. Someone earning minimum wage here would have to work 91 hours a week to afford the average one-bedroom apartment. And since 2010, the median home value in Texas has increased by more than 50 percent, rising from $136,000 to $207,000. 

The changes in affordability are reflected in architecture and new developments. Cities are pockmarked by homes that look like wonky, stacked boxes. The suburbs, historically clusters of white residents, are now some of the most diverse and radical places to live in the country.
