“This photograph of Barbara Merello is part of ‘High Tea,’ my series of photographs of women in the rooms where they spend most of their time. A longtime foreign-service worker with the U.S. Information Agency, Merello moved to Austin with her late husband in 1987. She lives a full and fascinating life, volunteering with continuing education programs and helping first-graders learn English. “If they can learn English and be kind to each other,” she says, “those are the two most important things.”
