BRING ON THE LEGISLATURE Pg. 23 A JOURNAL OF FREE VOICES NOVEMBER 25, 1988 $1.50 Election Day in Lorena State Treasurer Ann Richards put a small Central Texas suburb on the map when she quoted a letter from Lorena in her keynote address at the Democratic National Convention this summer. “I’ve wondered if people like us are the forgotten,” a Lorena resi dent wrote to Richards. “We ‘re not the poor and we ‘re not the rich. We ‘re not the very young or the aged. We’re the ‘average’ American family. We con sider ourselves middle class. ” Richards made the case that it was time for the middle class to come back to the Democratic Party. But did it sell in the suburbs?
