Born in New Mexico in 1938 the son of migrant farmworkers, Montoya draws inspiration from the great social art reform movements of Mexico of the 1920s and 1930s. Through their work these artists strove to express the culture, social needs, and political alignments of the underprivileged masses of Mexico. For Montoya these needs are the same as those of the indigenous and immigrant peoples of the United States participants and victims in the struggles for political, cultural, and economic equality. Montoya’s art is not only socially critical, but celebratory, paying homage to the humans from which it draws its inspiration: el pueblo chicano, mexicano, humano.
