Charlie was in prime shape that night. Handsome and affable as ever, every inch a congressman. He’s well liked in our district, and there was a good turnout. He kept up a lively dialogue with the folks and was completely at ease. When I asked my question, Charlie said that he was mostly for the Tennessee Colony dam, a mammoth part of the Trinity project and not only the most wasteful, but potentially the most destructive portion of the whole scheme. He didn’t seem to know a lot about it beyond the fact that he supported it. I was not satisfied with his answer, but then Charlie hadn’t been satisfied with my question, either. He did have firm convictions on one subject, however, one of the deadliest scourges threatening our land today. Charlie ‘lows as how it’s the environmentalists! It is not, nor has it ever been. You referred to Cleve Hamm by name at least five times and didn’t even bother to inquire about the correct spelling of his name. You misspelled Martha Reed’s name after she gave you the correct spelling when you called her. These errors are a matter of public record. There are many others contained in direct and indirect quotes from Mack. It is just this type of irresponsible journalism, as much as anything else, which cost Mack his job here. It was sometimes his practice, as it apparently is yours, too, to print the story now and worry about the facts later. E. H. Cornwell, publisher, Beaumont Enterprise and Journal, Box 3071, Beaumont. It seems to us that irresponsible journalism consists not of misspelling names, but of pulling journalistic punches and firing editors for fear of offending advertisers. -Eds. CLASSIFIED
