Rio Grande Valley, South Texas Variations on Texas These photographs are a random selection from work being done in Texas by Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin. Watriss and Baldwin are professional writers and photographers who are doing a photographic and historical study of four counties in Texas Grimes, Gillespie, Hidalgo, and Presidio. They are associates of the Winedale Museum of the University of Texas at Round Top and have been teaching oral history and photojournalism as guest lecturers with the UT American Studies Program in Austin. Before coming to Texas, they had been working as freelance writers and photojournalists in various parts of the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Watriss has written for newspapers, national magazines, and has done documentary films for educational television in New York. Baldwin has led several scientific and photographic expeditions in the Arctic, and he served as Peace Corps director in Borneo. In their Texas work, they have received support from the Leland Fikes Foundation, the William Stamps Farish Fund, and The Moody Foundation. Chicano mother and child, South Texas
