It isn’t easy. The easy way to get rid of cartons, cans and containers is to leave an ugly, expensive trail of refuse along the road. Responsible citizens don’t litter. UNITED STATES BREWERS ASSOCIATION, INC. 905 International Life Bldg., Austin, Texas 78701 Laugh In . . Following is an example of how to make the best of an embarrassing situation. When Rowan and Martin did a nationallytelevised skit concerning the bombing of school busses in the East Texas town, the Longview daily reported it as if it had been a friendly skewering at the local press club. The Longview schools, by the way, were forced to draw up a new integration plan this year by federal court order. Ed. Longview Look, Ma, we’re on the confusion tube! Longview, Texas was the subject of a skit on Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In” Monday night; and it came off hilariously. Here’s how it went, more or less: Against a backdrop of a news story which appeared to be a blown-up clip from The Wall Street Journal, Dan Rowan announced that officials in Longview had stated they saw no connection between the October 30, 1970 17 bombing of school buses and integration of the city’s schools. He said they had interviewed a Longview official and then the camera panned to the “official.” It was guest Tim Conway. Rowan: “How do you know that there is no connection, sir?” Conway: “I read it in the newspaper.” Rowan: “They were quoting you.” Conway: “A very reliable source.” Rowan: “Will the bombing interfere with integrating your schools.” Conway: “Not at all. We will institute Plan B.” Rowan: “What’s Plan B?” Conway: “We have 41 taxi-cabs standing by to haul them to school.” The phone rang and Conway picked it up. “Hello. Yes. All 41 of them?” He put down the phone and said: “There goes Plan B.” He then announced that there was another plan to transport them to Brownsville. The phone rang again. town? Goodbye.” Rowan: “Amazing.” Conway: “No, Brownsville.” Just before the blackout Conway insisted, however, that “We’re going to integrate ’em if we have to send them all the way to Mexico.” This is the eighth year in which Longview schools have been integrated and the plan under which the school district now is operating has been approved by a federal district court. During that time no act of violence by any adult has been linked to the integration of the school system. If the bombings involved in the case now being heard in Tyler are in truth connected to that integration, it will be up to a jury in a federal court to say so.
