This was not just an ordinary breakdown fiddlin’, beCause this fiddna’ was strictly for old timers, all of whom complain about being broke down themselves. . But they’re not. The winner, for example, was a sprightly 72-year-old gent from Rogers named Jack Lockhart who admits he can saw a pretty hot fiddle but allows, “If I spent as much time on the Good Book as I have on the fiddle I might have amounted to something.” Lockhart won the old fiddlers’ contestpart of Temple’s diamond jubilee celebrationwith toe-tapping renditions of Arkansas Traveler and Missippi Sawyer. It was the second time he has won a fiddling contest. Lockhart, says he spends two or three hours a day fiddling at home, and evidently it can get a bit wearing. “Sometimes my wife ees out on the back porch,” he said Neither Lockhart nor any of the other 18 entrants in the contest ever had any formal lessons.
