In March, a leading investigative online news journal in El Salvador, El Faro, broke the news that the government was negotiating a reduction in homicides with the country’s largest, most violent gangs: the Mara Salvatrucha and the MS-13. After revealing the secret negotiations, El Faro reporters found themselves targets of both government officials and the gangs. El Faro news director Carlos Dada who was recently in Austin for a forum held by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas talks about the story and how the reporters have dealt with the death threats. Dada also talks about the recent influx of unaccompanied, undocumented children from Central America who have been migrating to the United States.
