Our Horrible Heckling Class

October 7th, 2007 at 10:45 am

Tim Russert is a hack. I just finished watching his Meet the Press interview with John Edwards. In an extraordinary display of the virus that infects the Washington punditocracy, Russert spent 20 minutes asking Edwards about his electoral viability, how much campaign cash he has raised, and bullshit stereotypes perpetuated by the mainstream media. Nary a word on policy or issues. Nothing that will lead to solving the serious problems facing this country. Nothing that would help a voter understand the policy differences of the respective candidates. Instead, it was all Washington-insider crap — the horse race and the politics of personality. It is painfully clear, and has been for some time, that Russert and his fellow pundits are an impediment to a functioning democracy, which depends on the participation of an informed populace. They betray the public trust by fouling the airwaves with misdirection.

    I agree.
That kind of talk, though, seems to be the currency of political rhetoric, on both the state and federal level.

I am with you 100%. What miserable coverage the MSM is giving this election.

I usually like Tim Russert but I have to agree with Master Bernstein on this one. And he has the street creds to make his statement, well Jake.

Today, the Austin American-Statesman has a front page article about the Texas Oberver’s attempt to gain tapes recorded at the Capitol. http://www.statesman.com/news/content/region/legislature/stories/10//14//1014tape.html

This story is another heart warming example of the Texas Observer playing the David versus Goliath role once again, as it has all through its history. Under the law, it seems almost certain that Jake and the Texas Observer will win once more.

I write about gambling and I make the odds, 4 to 1 in the Texas Observer’s favor. I make the over and under on what the State of Texas will spend to hide the truth at a cool one million dollars.

    Go Jake!

I absolutely agree. It is a shame that a show with the history of Meet the Press has been reduced to the shallow, non-substantive questions of Tim Russert. Hopefully as more people speak up about this travesty, NBC will realize it needs a new host and a new tone.
