Speaking of Bad Ideas

May 17th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Another measure the Lege might want to reconsider is the Senate budget writers’ film industry incentives. It’s not the incentives that are the problem, it’s a stipulation that the money only goes out so long as filmmakers spit-shine Texas’ image. The Chronicle reported that grants could be denied to movie makers for “inappropriate content or content that portrays Texas or Texans in a negative fashion.” Apparently “Texas tough” doesn’t extend to our thin skins.

We’d almost be willing to entertain this terrible idea, despite the obvious First Amendment tussle it would create, if it meant we could retroactively wipe Man of the House from existence. I guess we’ll let the Constitution have its way this one time.

Seriously, though, it’s hard to understand how you encourage a huge creative industry to bring jobs to the region by suppressing creativity.
