Fact Checking Carl Isett

April 3rd, 2007 at 2:34 pm

“There is a difference between health care and health insurance,” intoned Rep. Carl Isett (R-Lubbock) during this afternoon’s heated House floor debate on HB 109, which restores some cuts to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Several other Republicans have made this specious argument today and in the past, but none have been as smug as Isett. “Do you understand the difference between insurance and health care? Do you understand that health insurance is not health care?” Isett condescendingly asked Democrat Joe Heflin.

In fact, numerous studies show that access to health insurance does equal access to health care. There’s overwhelming evidence that kids with health insurance receive better care, receive preventive care, and lead healthier lives. That’s the whole point of CHIP.
