Spencer Ackerman, a journalist embedded in Iraq, reports on the latest from Baghdad:
For some reason, there’s a bunch of kids who are able to run around the outskirts of the Camp Liberty grounds. It’s pretty crummy for them, as there’s not much to play with but dust and sticks, but they seem to like it. Excitedly, they jump to attention when the Humvees pass by… and deliver the devil’s horns to the soldiers. I had no idea what to make of this. Are they cursing the troops with smiles on their faces? Is this how Iraqis deliver the v-for-victory? The gunner today set me straight: a Texan in the previously deployed MP company made it his mission to teach the kids how to throw up the Hook Em Horns. … Tell the UT scouts to come look for these kids in seven years or so. The Aggies won’t be prepared for an Iraqi backfield.
Texas Fight, I suppose. This does raise some interesting questions. Do Aggies teach Iraqis to whoop? What about sawin’ ‘em off? You think Tech grads give instructions on the proper way to fling tortillas?
