Oh, the Vin-sanity

Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young electrified the Capitol today in his brief morning visits to the Senate and House. Lawmakers, reporters, aides, well, just about everyone fell all over themselves fawning over the former UT star. A few senators went especially overboard — think Terrell Owens at a GNC outlet. They used the occasion, as the Statesman reports, to comment about public education policy. How many more Vince Youngs, some senators wondered, could there be if we funded schools adequately?
Timeout, folks. We hate to be Tuesday afternoon quarterbacks on this one — and we love Vince as much as anyone else. But is the goal of our education policy really to create more 6-5, 230-pound quaterbacks with 4.5 speed in 40 yards and rocket arms? Barring some genetic tinkering, we don’t see emulating Vince Young as a common path to success. We’d settle for more doctors and lawyers and such.

I could understand where they were coming from. They weren’t referring to VY the athlete … but VY the exceptional person that is achieving great things with his life.
