Wish Upon One Star

We flipped through Gov. Perry’s proposed budget this morning — we read it just for the graphs, honest. We noticed that the budget directs as much as $5 million in public funds to Gov. Perry’s own nonprofit, the One Star Foundation. You can read all about One Star’s mission here and here. In its brief history, One Star has been a happy menage of public and private money flavored with Christian zealotry.
The proposed budget would give $3 million to the Texas Workforce Commission to “finance a partnership between the One Star Foundation” and the state to recruit “faith-based foster care families.” “These entities will recruit families through faith-based organizations to increase the number of foster homes….One Star could bolster [state] efforts to recruit foster families by leveraging its community-based connections.”
Perry also proposes forking over $2 million to One Star to “provide small to mid-sized non-profits with training on managing volunteers, grants, contracts and the use of technology.” Not exactly the most detailed description of what that money’s for. Hey, the Observer is a nonprofit. We have volunteers and near-volunteers. We have technology. Can we get some One Star love?
