Pardon the Introduction

Your name in lights. It doesn’t happen very often. I certainly never expected it, even if it’s only a jpeg on a just-started blog. By way of introducing myself, a few biographical details follow after the fold, and then we’ll return you to our regularly scheduled statehouse shenanigans.
Everyone calls me Matt, but I use the byline Matthew C. Wright so as not to be confused with the dozens of other Matt Wrights. Among our ranks are computer programmers, musicians, scholars, British TV personalities, state representatives, ad-men, and now a blogger. We are legion.
I grew up in Texas and went to UT, graduating in ‘04. I studied English in college but fell into journalism after working for the Daily Texan. After college I spent a year as the education reporter at the Temple Daily Telegram. Thanks to my, uh, boyish good looks, teachers at the high school often told me to tuck in my shirt, per the student dress code, so that beat got old pretty quickly. I moved back to Austin and eventually lucked into a gig as a part-time assistant at the Washington Post’s bureau in town and then tacked on this job about a year later.
Besides writing, my other loves in life are photography, food, basketball, and The Wire. I do the first two semi-professionally, as well, shooting photojournalism and weddings and working a few hours at P&K Grocery, an excellent deli/catering shop in South Austin. As for professional basketball, the closest I come to that is being the David Stern of my fantasy league.
Everyone at the Texas Observer has high hopes for the blog, and we hope to hear from readers often. You can write to us with tips, suggestions, scoops, or recommendations for great breakfast tacos at blog@texasobserver.org. We’re looking forward to it.
