Irony Watch

January 12th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Angleton Republican Dennis Bonnen successfully offered an amendment to the House rules that would prohibit smoking in the members lounge located off the House floor. For the last two sessions, Bonnen served as chairman of the Committee on Environmental Regulation. In that capacity, he has aggressively sought to block attempts to curb industry pollution. In 2003, the Washington, D.C.-based Clean Air Trust gave him a Clean Air Villain of the Month Award. Upon learning of the designation, Bonnen asserted that he was, “quite proud of that honor.”

According to the website scorecard.org, Bonnen’s district, which includes half of Brazoria County, ranks as among the most polluted in the entire country. Too bad he won’t do for his district what he was so eager to do for himself.
